NanoPhyll Inc. is Developing Proprietary Coating with Anti-Coronaviral Properties

May 22, 2020

The Forge alumnus, Nanophyll is looking into nanoparticle empowered coating solutions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. NanoPhyll Inc. announced that they have received two Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Grants totalling $100K to address pandemic-related research. Additionally, TriPhyll Inc. (a joint venture between NanoPhyll Inc. and Trillium Meditec Inc.) has shown positive results for their MAAC™ proprietary coating formulation. The proprietary nano-composite coating has shown antiviral properties against human coronavirus 229E in their lab. The proof of concept experiment was performed at a Health Canada-certified facility.

This nanoparticle empowered coating represents an attractive type of nanomaterial, as it can be biocompatible, nontoxic and the manufacturing steps are relatively simple. The application of an antiviral and antibacterial coating on the high touch public surfaces or on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) would constantly reduce the risk of spreading viruses and microbes. This demonstrates the broad application of TriPhyll’s coating, making it one step closer to developing a solution for self-sanitizing surfaces against COVID-19.

NSERC Grants:

NSERC is providing up to $15 million to stimulate collaborations between university academic researchers and the public and not-for-profit sectors, and industry to address pandemic-related research and technical challenges. Nanophyll received two grants, the first grant ($50K), was awarded to Dr. Tohid Didar at McMaster University Department of Mechanical Engineering to support developing an Anti-Viral coating for Pandemic Mitigation of COVID-19 using titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The second NSERC Grant ($50K) was awarded to Dr. Gelareh Momen of Québec à Chicoutimi to aid in designing, characterizing and valiating a new multifunctional coating, with antiviral and antibacterial properties for the COVID-19 pandemic.
