Undergoing spinal decompression surgery is scary. New literature reports find that ~10% of patients experience CSF leaks from dural tears during surgery, leading to numerous life-long complications. Surgeons have confirmed that dural tears occur because the dura mater enters the Kerrison Rongeurs cutting space, and that separating the bony layer is tricky and unstandardized. Are lifestyle changes the solution? They could be, but spinal stenosis (the antecedent to decompression surgery) is not entirely controllable. To meet the needs of our aging population, our patent-pending modified Kerrison Rongeur is able to separate the bone from the dura while preventing dura from entering the cutting space, preventing CSF leaks one surgery at a time.
