Magec Tech’s air sanitation lamp may eliminate Covid-19 virus indoors

March 14, 2021

On March 14, Magec Tech was featured in SooToday.com for its Magec Air 500 air sanitation lamp, designed to eliminate airborne viruses and bacteria before entering a person’s body. The Forge alumnus is a Canadian lighting manufacturing company located in Kitchener Waterloo producing motion activated overhead lighting systems that combine far-UVC and visible light to disinfect indoor spaces when people are present. If the air sanitation lamp is installed overhead in offices or public spaces the lamp would disinfect areas up to 500 square feet from airborne viruses and bacteria, including the COVID-19 virus, according to the Al Errington, who serves as Magec Tech’s business strategist. The start-up has set up a Canada Investment Network campaign to speed up the launch of Magec Air 500 to the market.

Al Errington met Magec Tech’s cofounders Anthony Baldasaro and Apoorva Yadav last year when he was searching for sanitation solutions for the tourism industry and was impressed by the innovative technology used in the air sanitation lamp. Currently, the Magec Air 500 has not been launched to the market and Magec Tech is looking for ways to reduce the cost of producing the air sanitation lamp. The start-up is looking for manufacturers to mass produce the air sanitization lamp or looking for partners in the lighting industry that could incorporate their technology into their product line.

“The Magec Air is a proactive tool to limit viral and bacterial infections,” said Baldasaro. “Installing the Magec Air would limit downtime caused by sick days and temporary shutdowns due to outbreaks. You may not see the Magec Air, but it’s always working to keep you safe.”

A study at Columbia University Irving Medical Center investigated the effect of far-UVC light (222 nm wavelength) on airborne Coronaviruses. The results showed that low-dose-rate far-UVC exposure can potentially safely provide a major reduction in the ambient level of airborne coronaviruses in occupied public locations. The Magec Air 500 utilizes current and past research on far-UVC light, to eliminate airborne bacteria and viruses. According to the study at Columbia University, far-UVC is not able to penetrate the tear layer of the eye or the outer dead-cell layer of skin and so it cannot interact or damage living cells in the body. In comparison to conventional germicidal UVC lights using 254 nm wavelength of UVC light that can only be used to disinfect unoccupied spaces, since direct exposure to these could be a health hazard.
