KiDi SMS is an engaging, interactive, web-based program, which uses gamification to incentivize self-management. When a child logs a minimum of 3 readings in KiDi SMS, a game is unlocked. The game, however, is only available until midnight. Thus, the user is forced to log three more readings the following day, in order to unlock another game. When patients have diabetes related questions, they are able to send a message directly to their doctor. KiDi SMS has been implemented for use at McMaster Children’s Hospital. Our pilot study found that 82% of participants logged a minimum of three times a day. In addition, 91% of users reported that they felt more motivated to self-manage using KiDi SMS.
